The United States will require another two weeks to obtain more definite information regarding the transmissibility and severity of the Omicron version, According to a White House news release, Dr. Anthony Fauci briefed President Joe Biden on Sunday.
The mutation emerged last week in South Africa and has now been found in nations throughout the world, including France, Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong.
Due to Omicron version, the United States will restrict travel from South Africa and several other countries, just weeks after the country reopened to international tourists.
According to Dr. Angelique Coetzee, chair of the South African Medical Association, the symptoms of omicron are “quite light” and may be treated at home. However, the World Health Organization reports that the first illnesses were among university students – younger people with relatively modest symptoms.
“There is presently no evidence to suggest that symptoms related with omicron vary from those associated with other variations,” WHO stated in a statement issued on Sunday.
Despite the unknowns surrounding Omicron version, Fauci told Biden that “current vaccinations are expected to give a degree of protection against severe instances of COVID,” emphasising that booster doses in addition to complete immunisation will provide better protection.
According to White House COVID-19 Response Coordinator Jeff Zients, around 36% of Americans have received their booster doses.
