Turning Air Into Perfume

As a byproduct of so many businesses, carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas causing climate change. Increasingly frequent natural disasters can be attributed to human emissions, which have a significant impact on our weather patterns.

Capturing and reusing carbon dioxide is an alternative to preventing it from being released into the environment, which is becoming a lengthy debate among our world leaders. And Air Company, a four-year-old start-up that employs carbon dioxide in all of its goods, has shown that option to be promising. Air Eau de Parfum is the company’s newest perfume, and the first one made primarily out of air.

Carbon dioxide may be converted into an extremely pure type of ethanol by Air Company. Perfume is mostly composed of air, although it can also contain water and fragrance oil if desired.

Stafford Sheehan, a co-founder and chief technology officer of Air Company, invented the technology. Coal is the most prevalent greenhouse gas (CO2), however it can be turned into non-harmful goods by Dr. Sheehan and Mr. Constantine after they met in 2017.

The company’s third consumer product is Air Eau de Parfum. In 2019, a vodka was released, followed by a hand sanitizer spray in 2020, the year of the hand sanitizer.

Joya Business, a Brooklyn-based design studio that specialised in unique fragrances, created and mixed the smell itself.. It’s like a bolt of sunlight breaking through a cloud, with a mineral undertone from the sea.

This sounds a lot like the title screen of a BBC nature programme, and that’s kind of the idea of the storey.

According to Mr. Constantine, “We wanted individuals who had spent a long time indoors during the epidemic to be able to reconnect with the outdoors, and with nature.” He said that air, water, and sun are the components that make up their technology. Think of those characteristics as the brand’s fragrance identity.

A more typical analysis of the scent includes fig leaf and orange peel on top, followed by jasmine, violet, and sweetwater in the centre, and powdered musk and tobacco at the base.

The scent is sold to both men and women equally. The pre-order price is $220 for 50 millilitres, and the business expects to supply the product in early 2022 at the earliest.

Mr. Constantine refers to Air Company as “source agnostic,” which means it obtains its CO2 from a variety of sources, including direct air capture. One of these partners is a New York industrial alcohol facility that captures the carbon dioxide produced during the fermentation process (which would otherwise be discharged into the atmosphere). It is then transported to an Air Innovation facility in Brooklyn where the CO2 is cooled, compressed, liquefied, and packed in tanks.

Air Eau de Parfum’s manufacturing techniques, including life cycle emissions of renewable power, production equipment, and carbon dioxide capture, result in a net elimination of 36 grammes of CO2, according to Mr. Constantine.

In spite of the fact that eco-friendly wine and perfume may be a lot of fun, it may not be the best use of this new technology. However, Air Company has greater plans in mind.

According to Mr. Constantine, “the prospects for exploiting carbon emissions are as broad and wide as we want them to be,” he said, adding that the business is working with industry partners to place its technology on wider global goals for a greater effect.

After winning a NASA competition in 2019 by successfully converting carbon dioxide into sugar, Air Company is working to produce a carbon-neutral aviation fuel that might replace liquid methane, a nonrenewable fossil fuel.

Even if all eligible sectors adopted our technique, we could reduce world CO2 emissions by more than 10 percent for one single technology,” Mr. Constantine added.
