The Cheyenne lady known as Owl lady (Cheyenne name: Mis-stan-stur; died 1847) was the daughter of White Thunder (and Tall Woman), a revered Cheyenne medicine man. She had four children with William Bent, an Anglo-American businessman, whom she married. Owl Woman’s contribution to the management of ties between Native American tribes and Anglo-American males earned her a spot in the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame.

Background: Central Plains Native American tribes

The Mexican War of Independence had caused political and economic unrest in the 1820s in the central plains region, which was home to a number of Native American tribes. The boundary was marked by the Arkansas River, with the United States to the north and Mexico to the south. The United States was encroaching on the region as part of its manifest destiny program, and there were several chances for economic partnerships, partly to replace those that had included the now-deposed Spanish authorities.

As Native American plains tribes from the central and southern plains attempted to define or redefine their territory, the region was also riven by unrest. For a variety of causes, tribes relocated to new areas within the plains: they may have been uprooted from their ancestral territories, experienced internal strife that led to their relocation, sought out better hunting or gathering grounds, or sought out terrain that best suited their lifestyle. Among the tribes in dispute were the Arapahoe, Kiowa, Cheyenne, and Comanche. It is probable that the Cheyenne migrated from Minnesota to the plains in the 17th and 18th centuries. By the middle of the 1800s, they coexisted with the Arapaho on terrain close to Bent’s Fort in Colorado, north of the Arkansas River.

The Comanche, like other Native American tribes, sought a better existence on the grasslands of the southern plains, which led to conflict with neighboring tribes. “The Great Peace of 1840” was an agreement with the Cheyenne that said that they would remain south of the Arkansas River and that the Cheyenne and Arapaho would remain above it.
