A social media post by a New York Times bestselling author, Chadwick Moore, cited that eleven days before Nancy’s disappearance, Savannah was in a ‘panic mode’. Well, the author cited a January 20, 2026, Daily Mail article that revealed Savannah was on medical leave from NBC’s Today show to recover from vocal cord surgery. However, suddenly the show’s rating went up. In her absence, the show drew 2.86 million viewers, a 12 per cent increase from the previous year, beating ABC rival Good Morning America.
The sudden rise in the show’s rating during Savannah’s absence left her in a ‘panic mode’. The spike in ratings despite her absence came as a shock to her. As a result, she forced her doctors to get her back to work. A source told the Daily Mail:
“Savannah is in full panic mode. While she’s been away with the vocal issue, the ratings went UP! Savannah was pushing her doctors to get her back to work as soon as possible. And so that the audience doesn’t forget her, she’s insisting the show tape a piece on her at home recovering.”
Savannah Guthrie’s co-workers revealed her absence gave a more relaxed newsroom
After her show’s ratings rose during her absence, Savannah obsessively kept tabs on them despite being on leave. The source also mentioned that her biggest fear was ‘how NBC sees her leverage’. The Daily Mail also reported that people who worked with her said the set felt more relaxed, organic, and warmer in her absence. As per the source:

The clip featured an armed individual outside her Tucson residence on the morning she vanished. The man seen in the video wore a full-face ski mask (balaclava), dark gloves, a zip-up jacket, khakis, sneakers, and a backpack with reflective strips on the straps.
