Paris Hilton is evidence that, particularly when celebrity knocks, a little sound parenting can make all the difference. As the 44-year-old celebrity accepted her “Woman of the Year” award at Los Angeles magazine’s LA Woman Luncheon on Friday, she recalled some touching moments with her mother, Kathy Hilton.

Paris reflected on a crucial time before her life changed dramatically and told the audience, “My mom always taught me the importance of giving back.”

“Paris, when the show airs on Fox tomorrow, your life is going to change forever and I always want you to remain the same sweet and down-to-earth girl you are and never forget that,” my mother said the night before The Simple Life aired. I will never forget that.

Paris acknowledged that, despite navigating the bewildering world of celebrity, she has kept her mother’s counsel “close to [her] heart.”

She said, “I’ve been in this town a long time,” in an interview with Jasmin Rosemberg, Editor-in-Chief of Los Angeles magazine. I’ve witnessed a great deal of fame and things go to people’s heads, and I never want to be like that. I’m really appreciative of my wonderful parents for shaping me into the woman I am today.

Paris didn’t stop there; she also offered her grandma a heartfelt shout-out, acknowledging both ladies for helping to mold her into the person she is today.
