The United Auto Employees union final week amended its structure to completely codify the direct election of senior leaders. The reform forces labor chiefs to reply to their members, and a report final month by the UAW’s federal monitor reveals why such accountability is required.
In 2021 a federal courtroom in Michigan appointed Neil Barofsky to observe the union as a part of a consent decree between the UAW and the feds. That adopted legal convictions of 11 senior UAW leaders, together with two previous presidents. Officers had spent members’ dues cash on posh getaways, customized golf gear, lavish meals, wine and different luxuries.
