England through to Women’s Euros final after beating Italy in extra time

Defending champions In the semi-finals of the Women’s Euros, England defeated Italy 2-1 in extra time after pulling off another incredible comeback.

With less than a minute remaining in the match at the Stade de Geneve in Switzerland, the Lionesses were behind 1-0 and were destined to be eliminated from the competition.

But the game went into extra time after Michelle Agyemang, 19, scored a last-minute equalizer in the 96th minute.

About ten minutes prior, England goalie Hannah Hampton had kept her team in the match with a spectacular double save.

After Barbara Bonansea’s goal in the 33rd minute, Italy had been the superior team for the majority of the match, but England gained the upper hand in extra time as they battled for the game-winning goal.

After England forward Beth Mead was taken down in the area in the 116th minute and the Lionesses were given a penalty, the match was decided.

Before she could tuck in the rebound, Chloe Kelly’s first spot kick was saved.

Perhaps even more dramatic was the match than England’s quarterfinal triumph, in which they overcame a 2-0 deficit to tie the score and defeat Sweden on penalties after Agyemang equalized in the 81st minute.

The victors of Wednesday’s semi-final between Spain and Germany will now face England, who have advanced to their third consecutive major final.

The final in Basel’s St. Jakob-Park will be a rematch of previous England finals, regardless of who they face.

In the 2023 Women’s World Cup final in Sydney, the Lionesses fell to Spain 1-0.
