Elijah Wood’s surprising statement about ‘Lord of the Rings’ income

Elijah Wood has revealed stunning information on his Lord of the Rings salary.

The actor, who portrayed Frodo Baggins in the highest-grossing film series, told Business Insider during the 2025 Texas Film Awards that his salary was not “massive.”

The 44-year-old stated, “It wasn’t the kind of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life because we weren’t making one movie and then renegotiating a contract for the next.”

Wood revealed that New Line Cinema and director Peter Jackson “took a real gamble” by filming the Rings trilogy consecutively.

The Bookworm actor revealed that he and his co-stars were never given the chance to renegotiate pay in light of the franchise’s box office performance.

“The advantage of that was that we were also committing to something that would be a permanent part of our lives,” Wood continued.

Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas, revealed earlier in a 2019 appearance on The Howard Stern Show that he received a mere $175,000 for all three films.

Later, Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee in several of Wood’s scenes, said he received roughly $250,000 for the films.

Wood responded that the amount was inaccurate and “it doesn’t matter” because “Rings” had a tremendous impact on his career and life when BI asked him if he made the same as Astin.
