The embezzlement case against Marine Le Pen has been referred to as a “witch hunt” by US President Donald Trump.

A court convicted Ms. Le Pen and twenty-six members of her National Rally (RN) party guilty of embezzling EU funds, and she was banned from standing for office for five years.

She was planning to overthrow President Emmanuel Macron in the 2027 presidential election, but the conviction will keep her from running.

“She suffered losses, but kept on going, and now, just before what would be a big victory, they get her on a minor charge that she probably knew nothing about – Sounds like a ‘bookkeeping’ error to me,” Mr. Trump said in a late Thursday Truth Social post in which he lauded Ms. Le Pen.
