During Sunday night’s Grammy Awards, minimalist fashion was amplified.
The wife of rapper and designer Kanye West, Bianca Censori, showed up wearing a look so simple that many people questioned if it qualified as indecent exposure.
Ms. Censori wore a large, shaggy coat to the Oscars, but shortly after she and her husband walked the red carpet, she took off her outerwear to show off her tight, transparent minidress, which appeared to expose her genitalia and breasts.
Ms. Censori, an Australian who worked in Melbourne as an interior designer and architect, has gained notoriety for her daring appearances since she first appeared in public with Mr. West a few years ago. Wearing thin tights and holding a purple cushion over her breasts, she strolled around Florence, Italy, in 2023. Though they were more opaque than the stocking she wore to the Grammys, she has previously donned a variety of body stocking ensembles in hues including gray, champagne, and cardinal red.
There’s a lengthy tradition of award shows including provocative attire.
Lil’ Kim wore a lilac jumpsuit to the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards, covering only one breast and accessorizing the other with a matching nipple pasty. In a stringy garment that bared her buttocks, actress Rose McGowan attended the same award presentation the previous year with her then-boyfriend Marilyn Manson. Additionally, Cher startled several spectators by accepting an Oscar for best actress in 1988 while wearing a lavishly embroidered, translucent dress designed by Bob Mackie.

On Sunday, Ms. Censori’s appearance also sparked a flurry of comments. On social media, several people made fun of her low-maintenance attire. Others asked whether her appearance was illegal.
A media relations officer for the Los Angeles Police Department told The New York Times that indecent exposure is defined under the California penal code as “the willful exposure of one’s genitals in a public place or in the presence of another person.”
On the red carpet Ms. Censori posed for pictures with her spouse at her side on Sunday night without putting her coat back on. Mr. West, on the other hand, was completely outfitted in sunglasses, matching slacks, and a black T-shirt.
