After not playing for his home state’s side since 2017, Australia Test all-rounder Beau Webster has signed a three-year contract to rejoin the BBL champions Hobart Hurricanes.
The 31-year-old Webster played five games for the Hurricanes in 2016–17, although he has been in Melbourne for the last eight seasons, first with the Renegades for four seasons and then with the Stars for another four.
However, Webster will return to play for Hurricanes in the BBL for the next three seasons after playing his whole domestic career for his native state of Tasmania.
“I am pumped to return to Hobart next summer for the BBL, and get the opportunity to play on a packed Ninja Stadium in front of our fans, my friends and family,” Webster stated.
“Vaughany [Jeff Vaughan] and Nelly [Nathan Ellis] have got the group playing a really good brand of cricket, and to see them win a championship makes me hungry to bring another one to ‘Canes fans next season.”
Given that the Hurricanes also boast seam-bowling all-rounders Chris Jordan and Mitchell Owen in the top seven of their championship-winning squad, Webster’s arrival is an intriguing decision. Webster hasn’t been as effective in T20 cricket, despite his stellar first-class record.
It will be intriguing to watch how he fits into the Hurricanes’ high-tempo batting team, since he has failed to score at a score more than 132 in any of his previous seven BBL seasons. Salliann Beams, general manager of the Hurricanes, was happy to see Webster return to Hobart.
