Queensland 147 (Rocchiccioli 7-52) and 153 (Morris 3-35) were defeated by an innings and 12 runs by Western Australia 312 (Fanning 95, Whiteman 67, Neser 4-34).
Western Australia, the defending champions, have rekindled their pursuit of Sheffield Shield history by defeating Queensland by an innings and 12 runs, moving up from last to third place.
On day three at the Gabba on Thursday, Queensland was bowled out for 153 in their second innings, with WA pacer Lance Morris taking three wickets.
WA began the match from the bottom of the ladder in an attempt to become the first state to win four straight shields since Tasmania joined the tournament in 1977–78. However, after defeating Victoria, they moved up to third place, with NSW (32.87) claiming second place.
Captain Sam Whiteman remarked, “We had a good little reflection… but you can only talk so much,” “The Gabba is a difficult venue to win at, so it’s satisfying to put some strategies into place and play very effectively with the bat and the ball. As we return home for the final two games, it offers us the best opportunity.”
After bowling Mark Steketee for a golden duck and removing Xavier Bartlett, Morris ripped through Queensland’s tail and was on a hat-trick. In order to miss the milestone, he sprayed his hat-trick attempt, sending a delivery to Mitch Swepson wildly down the legside.
In the first innings, offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli took a career-best 7 for 52, helping Queensland reach 147.
