A portion of Donald Trump’s proposal to disband the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and place some 2,700 of its employees on leave has been halted by a federal judge.

During his first term, the US president selected district judge Carl Nichols, who accepted the legal arguments of an association of foreign service workers and the largest government workers’ union.

They filed a lawsuit to prevent Mr. Trump’s administration from trying to shut down USAID, which provides billions of dollars in help globally.

Judge Nichols was informed by Brett Shumate of the Justice Department that the administration’s intentions would place around 2,200 USAID workers on paid leave.
