Jennifer Lopez talks about dealing with online criticism amid heartbreak

Jennifer Lopez shared her experiences with navigating the challenges of fame, heartbreak, and online scrutiny.

In a candid conversation with Interview magazine, Lopez, reflected on the tumultuous summer that saw her cancel her tour and end her marriage to Ben Affleck. “My whole f—ing world exploded,” she said.

As strangers speculated about her breakup online, the Marry Me star emphasised the importance of self-awareness. “I know that everything that’s being written and said about me, and all the conjecture of who I am as a person, is not who I am.”

A veteran of the entertainment industry, Lopez, 55, has learned to take online criticism in stride. “Social media… I don’t take it as seriously as everybody else,” she said. “I know I’m a good person. I know I’m a good mom.”

However, the singer-actor acknowledged that hurtful comments can still sting. “Please don’t get me wrong, if I see something that’s hurtful, I’m not Teflon.”

To cope with negativity, the On the Floor crooner focuses on her passions and priorities. “What matters for me, as an artist, is doing work that inspires me and that I enjoy doing… This is my life’s passion. I love to sing. I love to dance. I love to act.”

She also emphasised the importance of perspective, recognising that online trolls represent a small, unhappy faction. “Somebody who is going to take the time to make a video just to jump on that thing — how can I pay attention to that when I have these beautiful kids and all this amazing stuff going on in my life?”

With resilience and determination, Lopez offered a mantra for navigating life’s challenges. “Even in hard times, I just go, ‘You know the truth.’ Head high. Like they said in Finding Nemo: Keep on swimming.”
