On the 94th Academy Awards, Jane Campion, director of The Energy of the Canine, turned the third girl to ever win the Oscar for Finest Director. The award has beforehand been received in 2010 by Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Damage Locker, and in 2021 by Chloé Zhao, director of Nomadland.
This marks Campion’s second nomination for Finest Director — she is the one girl to have been nominated twice. Her first nomination got here in 1994, for The Piano. In her speech, she thanked the Academy, saying “it is a lifetime honor.”
The Energy of the Canine is now streaming on Netflix.
