Daniel Craig as DC’s ‘Sgt. Rock’

The James Bond actor has formally withdrawn from contention for the lead part in Luca Guadagnino’s (Queer) forthcoming DC Comics adaptation of Sgt. Rock, which was written and directed by Justin Kuritzkes.

Craig never formally signed on, according to a source close to the project, despite stories of his possible involvement initially surfacing in November.

According to Deadline, the hunt for a new leading man is already under way, though a DC Studios spokesman has not yet responded.

Sgt. Rock isn’t your average DC superhero movie, for those who don’t know—there aren’t any capes or cosmic conflicts. The character, who debuted in 1959, is a tough U.S. Army sergeant who is in charge of Easy Company during World War II.

In typical comic book tradition, he goes on to become the head of staff for Lex Luthor.

Heads of DC Studios According to reports, James Gunn and Peter Safran see the movie as a chance to broaden the breadth of their new DC world, demonstrating that their vision encompasses not only superheroes but also suspenseful, action-packed narrative.

Craig keeps his plate full in the meanwhile.

He received a lot of praise for his recent performance in Guadagnino’s Queer, even if it didn’t result in any significant award season accolades.

In Wake Up Dead Man, the third part of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out mystery series, he will play investigator Benoit Blanc once more.

Additionally, he will co-star with Charlize Theron in Justin Lin’s Two for the Money.

It’s unclear who will eventually fill Sgt. Rock’s shoes, but given DC’s dedication to creating a realistic war epic, they will undoubtedly find a deserving soldier quickly.
