Scarlett Johansson reflects on cons of dating people ‘not in the industry’

Scarlett Johansson recently talked out on the particular hurdles that come with dating outside of the Hollywood industry.

In an honest interview with fellow actor David Harbour for Interview magazine, published on Tuesday, June 10, the Black Widow star discussed how personal relationships can be difficult when one partner is unfamiliar with the demands of an acting job.

“I’ve had serious relationships with people that were not in the industry, and I found one of the challenges was that the person had no idea of what I needed to do my job,” Johansson revealed.

“Obviously, if I were dating an oncologist, I wouldn’t understand what they had to do for their profession. But it isn’t that abstract.”

She stated that a spouse from outside the profession may fail to grasp the lifestyle and emotional range that actors face on the job.

“I also think it’s easy to create a lot of jealousy when a person is not involved in the industry, because actors by nature are very free-spirited and they create very intimate relationships with people at work,” she told me.

“They can be loyal to a partner and also very engaged in all these other kinds of relationships, and I think it can be a blurry line for some people.”

“Also, to have a relationship with the public can be a complicated thing for people outside of the industry to understand,” according to her.

Before marrying Jost in 2020, Johansson was married to French writer and art trader Romain Dauriac from 2014 to 2017. She had previously been married to actor Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011.

Johansson reflected on her work habits, telling Harbour, “When I’m working, and you’re probably the same way, I’m fairly hermetic. If I’m in town, I prefer to go to a small restaurant and a movie theater, but I don’t want a lot of options. I want things to be, not rigorous, but you want a regularity.”

Johansson’s observations provided an honest look at the balance between personal life and a public-facing vocation, emphasizing how mutual understanding is critical in sustaining strong partnerships.
