Rohit Sharma is one of the most sought-after players in Indian cricket history. However, it’s fair to say that the Indian team didn’t end the year 2024 in the best way possible. But it is a gentle reminder for everyone that it was Rohit Sharma under whose leadership India won the T20 World Cup, beating South Africa in the final.
Rohit Sharma might not be in the team if not for captaincy, says Irfan Pathan
Not only did this Indian cricket team end India’s 13-year wait for an ICC trophy, but they also registered a historic win against South Africa at the Centurion level, the series 1-1. New Zealand whitewashed India 3-0, and Australia registered a 2-1 lead in the Border Gavaskar Trophy after the fourth Test match against the Men in Blue in December; Rohit Sharma is facing a lot of heat from his critics. Amidst all the criticism, former Indian cricketer, Irfan Pathan made a headline-breaking comment on Rohit Sharma’s performance in Test cricket.
The iconic bowler, Irfan Pathan, clearly stated that if Rohit Sharma wasn’t the captain, he wouldn’t have been a part of the team. The comment is doing rounds on the internet and has divided the internet into two halves. On the one hand, people are lauding Irfan’s unfiltered take on Rohit’s current form, but many criticise him for not backing players at their lowest. Coming back to Irfan’s statement on Rohit Sharma’s Test form, he said:
“If we talk about reality, considering how he is struggling with the bat, there might not have been a place for him in the playing XI. But because he is the captain, and you want to win the next match to draw the series, he stays in the team. But his form is so poor. Even in India, even before coming here, he wasn’t scoring runs, and he still hasn’t scored runs. This is a very disappointing scene when I see Rohit Sharma batting.”
Ritika Sajdeh defended Rohit Sharma by giving a solid response to Sunil Gavaskar’s criticising remarks on her husband
Amidst all the chaos around Irfan Pathan’s remarks on Rohit Sharma, several people recalled the time when Sunil Gavaskar criticised the Indian batter after some rumours speculated that he would not take part in India’s Test series against Australia. In response to the growing confusion about whether Rohit will captain team India against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy or not, Sunil Gavaskar advised the cricketing board to look for a new captain if he fails to make it to the first Test. Adding to his fiery response, Gavaskar also stated that “Indian cricket is the most important.”
After Sunil Gavaskar’s statement got a lot of attention, it was former Australian captain, Aaron Finch who came forward and backed Rohit Sharma. The former cricketer clearly stated that he disagrees with Suniel Gavaskar as, in his opinion, Rohit Sharma should spend all the time that he needs to be with his pregnant wife. A publication on their IG handle shared Aaron Finch and Sunil Gavaskar’s respective statements. Ritika Sajdeh liked that post and even dropped a thumbs-up in the comment section, tagging the Australian cricketer.
Ritika Sajdeh’s indirect response to Sunil Gavaskar received a lot of love and support from cricket fanatics nationwide. For the uninitiated, a few days after Sunil Gavaskar’s comment on Rohit Sharma, the latter’s wife gave birth to a baby boy on November 15, 2024. The couple named their second child, Ahaan.
