The spirit of patriotism and pleasure that I noticed then continues to be there now, as Russia invades.
As a 17-year-old Christian missionary, I arrived in Kyiv in spring 2005. A number of households took my mother, father, and me straight to Maidan, the square within the heart of town. It was dotted with orange flags and indicators emblazoned with a single phrase: “Tak,” Ukrainian for “sure.”
