Newspaper writer Jimmy Lai’s trial on nationwide safety prices has been delayed till September. Already he has been convicted on trumped-up prices of enterprise fraud and collaborating in illegal protests. However even from his jail cell, Mr. Lai is embarrassing Hong Kong authorities, who need to preserve altering the principles to get him.

On Monday White Home nationwide safety adviser Jake Sullivan put it bluntly. “What’s simply occurred with respect to Jimmy Lai is a—in our view, a violation of the fundamental legislation and the commitments that China made with respect to autonomy for Hong Kong.” Two days earlier, after Mr. Lai was handed a 69-month sentence on his fraud conviction, State Division spokesman Ned Value tweeted that the U.S. condemns the “grossly unjust consequence.”
