Nicholas Hoult recently talked about an unexpected development that occurred during the casting of the James Gunn-directed Superman movie, which is currently scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.

During his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote the film with co-star David Corenswet, Hoult disclosed that he had actually tried out for the part of Lex Luthor after trying out for the part of Clark Kent.

“I walked around the corner and there was like, lots of shadows on the studio lot and then one ray of sunshine, and David had taken a seat into this ray of sunshine and was sitting there, like charging up from the sun, like Superman does, getting his power,” Hoult recalled when recalling their first encounter during auditions.

Thinking back on the epiphany, Hoult remarked, “I’d be happy if this guy was Superman,” observing Corenswet’s height, face, and voice. Really, truly, you’re ideal for it.

Echoing this feeling, Corenswet praised Hoult and recalled their first encounter during their auditions for the same part.

“I’ve long respected Nick as an actor, and to get to meet him in this setting while both of us are dressed as Clark Kent… “It was fantastic,” he remarked.

“I thought, ‘This may be the best thing that happens to this film, because a superhero is only as interesting as their villain,'” Corenswet said when he learned that Hoult would play Lex Luthor.
