Entry into Mongolia:
Driving licence
An Australian driver’s licence or an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not valid in Mongolia. You can’t drive a car or ride a motorbike.
Take a taxi or hire a driver for short trips.
People who stay for more than a year need a Mongolian visa.
Travel by car
There is a customs office in Mongolia, and you must get permission before you can drive to Mongolia.
These things will help with that:
A copy of the passport’s bio data page; a copy of the driver’s licence, car registration papers, ownership certificate, and travel route; and Mongolian phone and email numbers.
The Mongolian Customs Office will write on the foreign citizen’s visa that the person came into the country with a car. When the person leaves the country, the Customs Office will look at the visa to see if the person came in with a car.
As part of their border protection, Mongolian Border Protection checks the visa as well as asking for documents about the car, and they need to know in advance if a lot of foreigners come into the country by car at the same time.
Road travel
In Mongolia, it can be dangerous to drive at night because there aren’t many lights.
