Photos taken at the site showed a black Audi SUV with a crushed front part.

During a news conference, Vancouver Police Deputy Chief Constable Steve Rai stated that the death toll may increase and that dozens more people were hurt, some critically.

He also called the incident “the darkest day in our city’s history” and stated that the oldest casualty was 65.

Mr. Rai went on to say that the individual was first captured by onlookers before being taken into custody.
