Madonna with Elton John?
The rivalry between these two heavyweights of the music industry does not stand out in the history of celebrity feuds. You might actually be excused for not remembering that they had a disagreement that was still unresolved decades ago.
That is, until they reconciled backstage at “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend. On social media, the two enthusiastically shared their reunion.
“At last, we buried the hatchet!” Madonna wrote in a lengthy Instagram message on Monday, which included a picture of the two performers holding hands.
She wrote of her moment of forgiveness, saying she went to confront John backstage after learning he was going to be the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” with Brandi Carlile.
“When I first met him, he said, ‘Forgive Me,’ and the wall between us collapsed,” she wrote. She also mentioned that they were embracing within minutes.
John replied to her article, saying, “I’m not proud of what I said, but thank you for forgiving me and my big mouth.”
With the comment, “a healing moment,” he shared the identical image on his Instagram story.
Some viewers said, “Remind me what this was about again?” after seeing the heartwarming event.
On the specifics of their disagreement, the two were evasive. “It hurt me over the decades to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist,” was all that Madonna stated.
John’s harsh remarks about Madonna in the early 2000s marked the beginning of the enmity. Her theme song for the James Bond movie of the same name, “Die Another Day,” was dubbed the “worst Bond tune ever” by him in 2002.
When he accepted the classic songwriter award at the Q Awards, the now-defunct British music awards, in 2004, he asked, “Since when has lip-syncing been live?” in reference to Madonna’s nomination for best live performance. At the time, Madonna’s agent said that she didn’t lip-synch.
John claimed that Madonna has little chance of defeating him in the 2012 Golden Globes contest for best original song. She expressed her wish that he would keep talking to her for the following few years after she won.
John labeled Madonna a “nightmare” and declared her career over to an Australian reporter that year.
What changed between then and this weekend is unknown. However, Madonna hinted to the possibility of a musical collaboration in her Monday tweet.
She added that John wanted to work with her after telling her that he had composed a song for her.
