Everyone. On November 1, 2020, Costa Rica will reopen to tourists again. Of course, there are limits. Visa rules remain unchanged.

As of January 20, 2022, numerous activities will need vaccination. However, the ground limits will make it less appealing to non-vaccinated visitors.

The president of Costa Rica passed a bill allowing “digital nomads” to stay for two years. Individuals must earn $3,000 and families must earn $5,000 annually to qualify. Their US driver’s licences are accepted in Costa Rica, and they may open a bank account.

Restrictions

Availablity of travel insurance has been extended to fully vaccinated adults and children under the age of 18. The health pass can be supplemented by proof of immunisation (14 days previously).

Amounts up to $2,000 for quarantine and $50,000 for Covid-19 medical expenditures must be insured by non-vaccinated persons. Along with it must be a certificate in English or Spanish listing the policyholder’s name, dates covered, and the guarantees.

Aliens may self-isolate residents and Costa Ricans.

Visitors without a visa were let back in on April 5th. As of April 5, the prior 14-day land-entry quarantine also ended.

It warns Americans to “avoid any travel to Costa Rica” due to “extremely high risks.” Variants can infect even fully immunised tourists. Although it has downgraded other nations with high infection rates, it has preserved this guidance until June 1. In September, US visitors accounted for 93% of all international visitors in 2019.

Also in June, the UK put Costa Rica on its “red list,” requiring hotel quarantine for visitors.

On November 2, 2021, American Airlines began flying from Chicago and Austin to San Jose, Calif. On December 2, Avianca began flying from Cancun. On December 15, British Airways resumed service.

As of December 31, Costa Rica had 570,000 cases and 7353 fatalities. However, the government reports that infection and mortality rates reached new highs in May of 2021, though they have since dropped.

On December 24, 432 new infections were reported, down from 17,469 the week before September 11, and similar to the prior week’s 522 new infections. A third day without a fatality occurred on December 14.

There were 1,696 additional cases recorded in the week leading up to December 31 as a result of the advent of the Omicron strain.

In December 2020, Costa Rica joined Mexico as one of the first Latin American countries to get immunizations. According to John Hopkins University, little over 68% of the population was completely vaccinated as of December 24, however local figures put it at over 80%.
