Nikki Glaser, the host, wasted no time in making fun of the celebrities.
The comedian set the tone for a lighthearted start to Hollywood’s awards season with quips about everything from Timothee Chalamet’s beard and his role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s strange Wicked press interviews.
“Tonight we celebrate the best of film and hold space for television,” she said in her introductory remarks.
Glaser joked, pointing out that the gathering was full with powerful, wealthy, and well-known people: “You could really do anything.” Unless you tell the nation who should be elected.
She later told the audience that the “real goal of acting” is to become successful enough to start a tequila company, “which would make stars rich enough that they never needed to act again.”
