French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted a tribute to the director, writing the nation has misplaced a “nationwide treasure.”
“It was like an apparition in French cinema,” Macron tweeted. “Then he turned certainly one of its masters. Jean-Luc Godard, probably the most iconoclastic of New Wave administrators, had invented a resolutely fashionable, intensely free artwork. We lose a nationwide treasure, a genius outlook.”
