Even though Cam Ward hasn’t made up his mind about throwing at the NFL Combine next week, he is aware of how he will respond if scouts or team officials inquire as to whether he left the Miami Hurricanes team by not playing in his final game.
Prior to being presented with the Davey O’Brien Award as the country’s best collegiate quarterback, Ward stated, “Okay, you’re either going to draft me or you’re not,” on Monday night. “It is your responsibility if you do not draft me. You must keep in mind that you are the same team that will have to play me for the remainder of my career, and I will keep that in mind.”
When Ward missed the second half of the Hurricanes’ 42-41 loss to Iowa State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in December, he was bombarded with online abuse. Prior to halftime, he broke the NCAA Division I record for career touchdown passes.
The quarterback, who may be the first player selected in the April NFL Draft, said that he and the entire coaching staff decided beforehand not to participate in the second half of that bowl game.
