On the set of one of his movies, one of France’s most popular actors was found guilty of sexually abusing two women.

The 76-year-old Gerard Depardieu has acted in more than 200 films over the course of five decades. He has received two Cesar Awards for best lead actor and has been nominated for 15 more Cesars and an Oscar.

He disputed both of the charges of sexual assault, which the Tribunal de Paris justices ruled him guilty of on Tuesday. He plans to appeal.

However, many see Depardieu’s court case—which follows Gisele Pelicot’s, who gave up her anonymity to disclose that her husband had planned her drugging and rape by over 50 men—as evidence that France is now receiving its due.
