Gardner takes Mooney’s position as the Gujarat Giants’ WPL 2025 captain.

“It is an absolute honour for me to be named the captain of Gujarat Giants.” In a Giants statement, Gardner stated. “I’ve enjoyed being a member of this squad, and I can’t wait to guide this outstanding group in the forthcoming campaign. Our team is full with Indian potential and a fantastic blend of young and seasoned players. I’m excited to work with the group and bring pride to our supporters.

Gardner’s versatility has been an invaluable asset to Australia in a variety of forms. She took five wickets in the most recent Women’s Ashes, including a four-for in the second innings of the lone Test match.

“She is a fierce competitor,” Michael Klinger, the head coach of the Giants, stated. “She is the perfect candidate to lead the Gujarat Giants because of her tactical expertise, game awareness, and capacity to motivate players. We are certain that she will take the initiative and lead the group to a successful campaign.

The decision to promote Gardner to captain was taken in order to free up Mooney, who serves as the Giants’ opening batsman and designated wicketkeeper. Gardner has been with the team since the first season. After Mooney suffered a calf injury one game into the 2023 WPL, Gardner served as the Giants’ vice-captain for the majority of the inaugural campaign.

Gardner is the ICC’s best all-round player in the ODI rankings, while Mooney is the top batter in the T20I format.

“I would like to thank Mooney for her highly valued leadership,” Klinger stated. She may now concentrate on starting the batting order and taking wickets. She is still one of our group’s key leaders.

The Giants reorganized their support staff ahead of the WPL 2025 auction, firing mentor Mithali Raj and assistant coach Nooshin Al Khadeer. IPL spin-bowling coach Pravin Tambe is the bowling coach for the Lucknow Super Giants, while Australia assistant coach Daniel Marsh came as the batting coach.
