Five killed and several injured after attack on UN aid convoy in Sudan

An attack on an aid convoy in the North Darfur area of Sudan has resulted in five fatalities and several injuries.

The World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF released a statement on Tuesday revealing the death toll.

A UN convoy carrying supplies to El Fasher, North Darfur, was attacked overnight, according to earlier reports, and “multiple casualties” were recorded.

The convoy of 15 trucks had traveled 1,120 kilometers from Port Sudan, according to the joint statement, and was attempting to negotiate entrance to El Fasher on Monday night when it was targeted.

“Multiple trucks were burned and critical humanitarian supplies were damaged in addition to the deaths and injuries,” claimed the statement.

Over half of the Sudanese population is suffering from severe hunger as a result of aid supplies frequently getting caught in the crossfire of the two-year conflict between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Army.

Targeting WFP facilities in El Fasher last week resulted in damage to a clinic, office building, and workshop.

Last month, a second attack on North Kordofan’s El Obeid hospital claimed the lives of many medical personnel.

In a South Kordofan hospital, a woman clutches her extremely malnourished kid.

They expressed their “heartfelt sympathy and support to all those injured” as well as their condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

The joint statement closed by saying, “It is devastating that the supplies have not reached the vulnerable children and families they were intended to.”

“For far too long, attacks on people, civilian infrastructure, humanitarian personnel, aid, and activities have gone unpunished in Sudan.

“Despite the instability, WFP and UNICEF personnel are still on the ground and demand that all parties adhere to international humanitarian law and provide safe, secure operational conditions. It is essential to the lives of millions of people in Sudan, notably in places like El Fasher in Darfur.
