European heatwave leaves Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece in sweltering 40C heat

Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece are experiencing extreme heatwaves that have reached temperatures of above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

With temperatures in Lisbon predicted to surpass 42C (107F) on Sunday, two-thirds of Portugal was placed on high alert for excessive heat and the possibility of wildfires.

Temperatures in southern Spain are significantly higher than usual; Seville and other towns may expect temperatures of 42°C.

Trade unions are calling for the regulations to be expanded and implemented countrywide. On Sunday, outdoor labor was prohibited during the hottest parts of the day in a number of Italian areas, including Lazio, Tuscany, Calabria, Puglia, and Umbria.

Rome, Milan, and Naples were among the twenty-one cities out of 27 that were placed under the maximum heat alert.
