England through to semi-finals of Women’s Euros after beating Sweden on penalties

After eliminating Sweden, England secured their spot in the Women’s Euro semifinals.

After fighting back to force extra time, the Lionesses prevailed 3-2 on penalties at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich, Switzerland.

In the quarterfinal match, goals from Sweden’s Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius had put the reigning champions behind 2-0 at the half.

Toward the end of regular time, England then leveled the playing field. On minute 79, Lucy Bronze scored the first goal for England with help from replacement Chloe Kelly. Michelle Agyemang did the same two minutes later, bringing the score to 2-2.

Bronze’s penalty kept England’s hopes alive.

Extra time ended without a goal, therefore penalties were called.

Alessia Russo started things off by scoring for England, and then Sweden’s Jennifer Falk stopped tries by Lauren James, Alex Greenwood, Beth Mead, and Grace Clinton.

Falk confronted England’s Hannah Hampton but sent the ball over the crossbar, sending the match into sudden death.
