A U.S. civil rights official has warned two schools that their segregated commencement ceremonies for Black, LGBTQ and different minority college students are unlawful below federal anti-discrimination legal guidelines.
Legal professional Peter Kirsanow, a Black member of the U.S. Fee on Civil Rights, admonished California Polytechnic State College and Oakton Neighborhood Faculty in Illinois that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bars them as government-funded colleges from providing packages that exclude White, male college students.
In two separate letters shared with The Washington Instances, he cites the act’s Title VI provision that “no individual in the USA shall, on the bottom of race, colour, or nationwide origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the advantages of, or be topic to discrimination below any program or exercise receiving Federal monetary help.”
Mr. Kirsanow wrote to California Polytechnic President Jeffrey D. Armstrong on April 25 in regards to the college’s plan to carry 9 separate graduations subsequent month for Black, “Latinx/Chicanx,” Jewish, disabled, Asian and different college students.
