The prime minister of Canada told Sky News that the decision by the UK government to grant Donald Trump an extraordinary second state visit to the UK “weren’t impressed” with Canadians.

During a visit to the Oval Office, Sir Keir Starmer gave the invitation to the US president.

The invitation “cut across clear messages” that the Canadian government was attempting to convey to the White House in reaction to their threats against Canada’s sovereignty, according to Mark Carney, the recently elected Liberal leader.

“Considering the situation, I believe that they [Canadians] weren’t impressed by that gesture. We were being quite explicit about the sovereignty-related problems at the time.

Explained: Who is Mark Carney?

It coincides with the prime minister of Canada’s “clear message of sovereignty” inviting the King, who is Canada’s head of state, to open the country’s parliament later this month.

Mr. Carney claims it is “not coincidental” that the sovereign is doing this role for the first time in almost 50 years.

“The president has emphasized every subject pertaining to Canada’s sovereignty. Therefore, it’s not a coincidence, but for Canadians, it’s also a time of affirmation.

After running on a platform of opposing American threats to Canadian sovereignty, the former governor of the Bank of England was re-elected. He had insisted on respecting Canadian sovereignty before he would speak to Mr. Trump.
