On Friday, it announced that Mazzulla had been signed to a multi-year contract extension, going beyond a simple statement. The new agreement’s length and specifics were not disclosed.
“I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children,” stated Mazzulla. “We appreciate our staff’s assistance, Brad’s mentoring, and our collaboration with our ownership groups. Above all, I am appreciative of the guys I have had the opportunity to teach over the last three seasons. I’m excited to play for the Boston Celtics and the city.”
In his third season as Boston’s coach, Mazzulla, 37, has led the team to the postseason each year, including winning the team’s 18th NBA championship to end the 2023–24 campaign. Since the 1968–69 season, when 35-year-old Bill Russell led the Celtics to the title as a player-coach, he was the youngest head coach to win the NBA Finals.
Mazzulla’s contract specifics have never been made public by Stevens, however the coach was first granted an extension soon after the interim tag was removed in February 2023. Mazzulla got at least one other extension before his most recent one, Stevens revealed in June.
In a statement, Stevens added, “He has a passion for the Celtics that is only matched by our most ardent fans and understands the job.” “In his first three years as head coach, he has put in a lot of labor and achieved incredible feats, such as winning the 2024 NBA Championship and averaging over 60 victories every season. Joe is a talented leader who consistently dedicates himself to learning, growing, and making the most of every opportunity we have to play for the Boston Celtics.”
Mazzulla joined the Celtics in 2019 and served as an assistant coach for the following three seasons until taking over as temporary head coach when former manager Ime Udoka was banned by the team before the 2022–2023 season began.
