A life raft carrying the survivors of a medical ship that was struck by a German torpedo and sunk is floating in the North Atlantic in late 1945, close to the conclusion of World War II. After being stranded for days and running out of food, the survivors—American cook Bigelow, American mechanic Jackson, British nurse Jane Prescott, British codebreaker Gerard Faraday, Australian soldier Sinclair, Russian sniper Alexander Teplov, and Malone, the American hospital ship captain—are abruptly passed by a Nazi minesweeper. The party boards the passing ship, but Malone is killed by the ship’s propellers after falling while ascending.

The steering wheel is shackled in place, and the body of one of the German crew members is disfigured when Sinclair, Teplov, and Bigelow visit the bridge to inspect the apparently deserted ship. When Jackson inspects the engine below deck, he finds what appear to be burned-to-death victims. He also learns that the boiler has failed and that the ship might blow up at any moment if the engine continues to operate. Jackson turns off the engine, leaving the ship dead in the sea.

When the survivors find a little girl hiding in the galley, she instinctively bites Jane out of panic. They calm her down, and she identifies herself as Mya in Romanian. Further below deck, Mya guides the survivors to a hefty, closed door. When they unlock it, they find a German crew member who is still alive. He is frightened by Mya and tries to kill her with his Luger, killing Jackson in the process. Teplov then murders the German. In the chamber where the German survivor was holed up, Bigelow and Sinclair discover several enormous wooden boxes, a box of gold, and a box full of crucifixes and clear glass receptacles that resemble water-filled grenades.

After that, they search the deceased captain’s rooms and discover a plethora of photos and records of Nazi soldiers discovering antiquated items, including what seem to be several sarcophagi, as well as a large book with pictures of hideous animals. In addition to opening one of the big wooden crates that holds one of the sarcophagi from the photos, Bigelow returns to the storage area to steal some of the wealth. When he opens it to search for additional riches after breaking the shackles that hold it closed, he discovers a sleeping monster with a face resembling a bat.
