Ashleigh Barty beat Danielle Collins to win the Australian Open singles for the first time since 1978. You could not even lose a set to the world’s number one player, who won a historic title without even losing a game.
Australian tennis fans had to wait more than four years for one of their own to win the Australian Open. Chris O’Neil was the last Aussie to win the title.
Ashleigh Barty has now won three grand slams, with the first two coming at the French Open in 2019 and Wimbledon in 2021. The 25-year-old is undoubtedly the most dominant player on the women’s tour right now.
There is still a question about Barty’s grand slam record: how many?
During her post-match interview, Ashleigh Barty said that she was “so lucky” to have a lot of people who loved and helped her. Having so much love in your corner makes you a very lucky person. We started out together right from the start. We did everything together, and no one in our group has changed. To die for me would be a shame.
As an Aussie, one of the best parts of this match was being able to share it with so many people and the team. You were nothing but unique. ”
This crowd is one of the most fun I’ve ever played in front of, and you guys made me happy and helped me play my best tennis, so thanks for all your love and support over the last few weeks.”
A dream has come true for me, and I’m so proud to be an Aussie. “We’ll see each other again soon.”
Rafael Nadal is one win away from a record-breaking grand slam title after he made it to the Australian Open last year. He needs to win one more match to do that.
There is a blast that starts.
Both players didn’t show any signs of nerves in the first few minutes, and they exchanged some very angry pictures. Ashleigh Barty’s backhand was causing a lot of problems for Danielle Collins. The Australian couldn’t keep up with the powerful groundstroke as it ripped thru the Rod Laver court.
Barty, on the other hand, was able to respond to her own serve, smashing an early 181km/h ace past her opponent as she was able to save an early break point to the delight of the crowd.
When Barty scored a point, the partisan helpers in the house started to show their support. They were then given something to cheer about in Danielle Collins’s third service game. A few free groundstrokes and a wild double fault gave Barty a break of serve.
That was a big help in getting rid of any rigidity. Barty was still hurting as the home favorite ripped off two more holds of serve to win the first set in a split second.
Even if Danielle Collins didn’t make it to the final, it is still one of the best comeback stories in tennis.
In April of last year, she had emergency surgery for endometriosis, which is when the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of it. She also had a belly injury at the French Open.
The 28-year-old has talked openly about the excruciating pain she went thru, calling it one of the worst things she has ever been thru.
Danielle Collins has said that the surgeon saved her career, and now she’s playing some of the best tennis of her life. Her run to the last in Melbourne is expected to push her into the world’s top 10 for the first time.
The player should get a lot of credit for not getting angry that a close opening set had been lost so quickly.
When she’s on the court, the American usually wears her heart on her sleeve. So far, she’s kept her emotions under wraps for the most important event of her career.
That changed at the start of the second set, tho, when Ashleigh Barty started to fight back against her opponent’s powerful shots, which now seemed to have a little more bite.
Danielle Collins was able to break Barty for the first time in the match when she made two mistakes in her first service game of the set.
Only Collins’ yell could be heard. She yelled, “Come on,” with her fist clenched in the direction of her field.
There had been a huge shift in momentum from the first set, with Collins now winning almost every rally.
The crowd knew that Barty was nervous, so they did their best to get her back into the match. One forehand winner down the road was cheered by maybe the loudest crowd of the nite so far.
However, it wasn’t enough to get Barty back on track because the size of the event now seemed to be taking a toll on her.
The forehand was becoming more and more wild and erratic, and Collins found another break of serve that seemed to put the set out of her opponent’s reach.
Ashleigh Barty, on the other hand, is a fighter on the court, so she fought back and got back a break of serve. Then she fired off a love service game to put more pressure on Collins.
Because of the stress Danielle Collins was under, Barty got a second break of serve. Her first serve and backhand both failed her, giving Barty a second break.
The Rod Laver area, which had been quiet for a lot of the second set, started to get loud again. It was now louder than it had been all nite.
At one point, Collins was unhappy with some of the people in the crowd who started shouting before the points had been scored, which made the umpire tell them not to do that again.
A few minutes ago, Collins was going to get a walkover set, but now it’s a real fight.
They both played strong service games to take the set to a tie break, but Danielle Collins will have wished these first serves had come a few games earlier.
Ashleigh Barty took a 4-0 lead in the tie break and never looked like giving it back. He won the match, 7-2, and Rod Laver celebrated.
After 44 long years, Australia finally has its own grand slam singles champion again, and this time it was a woman.
